Philosophy of Teaching Mathematics
Mathematics is constantly changing and evolving in our daily lives; it is more than calculating and getting an answer but makes us think deeper about how the world works. Teachers are the professionals that inspire math and make it enjoyable for students throughout the year. It is imperative that the teacher provides the knowledge that is needed for students to be successful in school and life.
Throughout the school year, it is important that mathematic is taught every day in various ways that the child can understand. Teaching through explicit instruction and activities such as using the SMART Board are ways of making the lessons more fun. By incorporating a variety of activities, lessons, or approaches, students can learn and be more motivated to understand math and enjoy it as well. Showing different ways of instruction is important because students learn through different methods such as auditory, visual, or kinesthetic ways. Doing lessons or activities, students learn to understand, apply, analyze, and evaluate a problem. I feel that students should not be so dependent on the calculator. By performing math without a calculator, students think more critically and are able to solve certain problems without being dependent on it.
The importance of solving a problem and applying it to everyday life is stressed in the math classroom. I would like to teach students that math doesn’t only apply in the classroom but in the world as well. For example, students can learn about pricing and checking in seventh grade, which is a skill they will need to have for their futures. The significance for them to learn math can apply for various jobs like architecture and culinary arts, where the math such as geometry, calculus, and algebraic operations are inherent. I will help my students be successful in the classroom by providing a quality education geared for their success. Thus, I will create lessons that engage students, such as providing activities using the SMART Board. When a student is struggling in a certain topic I would determine what intervention is needed so that the student understands the concept.
It is crucial for a teacher to create an interesting, intriguing, and encouraging math instruction for students within the classroom. Having patience and using differentiated instruction is principal, because not every student will understand concepts right away. This can be a good thing, as I will create a classroom environment where they do not have to be afraid to make mistakes and try something new. Having a positive attitude and encouraging students to do their best work is vital to having a productive math classroom.
